WBB claims big road win at UT Dallas

RICHARDSON, Texas – LETU women's basketball utilized a balanced attack to knock off UT Dallas 76-73, at the UT Dallas Activity Center Tuesday.

Five YellowJackets finished in double-digit scoring, securing Head Coach Cassi Rozanski's first-career win over her alma mater.

LETU moved to 12-8 overall, including 9-6 in American Southwest Conference play, while the Comets fell to 12-7, 11-5.

Ajanae Jones finished with a game-high 17 points, while Allaira Jones totaled 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and blocked three shots.

Keauna Whitfield tallied 14 points, eight rebounds, six assists, three steals and a block. Malacia Guy chipped in with 14 points, six boards and two helpers.

Kiara McElroy dropped in 13 points and corralled five rebounds.

Both sides shot over 70% from the field in the first quarter but UT Dallas hit 6 of 7 from three-point range and built its biggest advantage at 21-14, seven minutes in. The YellowJackets shrunk the deficit to 26-23, at the end of the period.

LETU outscored the hosts 39-28, over the middle two frames, building a 47-42, margin at the half. Protecting the ball, turning over twice in the final half and not allowing any points in the game from miscues, the YellowJackets nudged their cushion out to eight, their largest of the contests at 62-53.

The Comets pulled even twice but failed to move in font until Paris Kiser converted two at the free-throw line, with 2:30 remaining. Jones answered with a pair at the stripe, vaulting LETU back to the lead.

UT Dallas grabbed its final advantage with a layup by with 70 seconds left. Kyndall Hardeman's lone bucket of the contest and Malacie Guy's two-made free throws salted away the road triumph.

LETU concludes the regular season Saturday at Ozarks, with a 1 p.m. tip in Clarksville, Arkansas. The YellowJackets locked in the fifth seed in the conference championship, which begins Thursday, Feb. 24, in Marshall, Texas. UT Dallas dropped to fourth, setting up a possible rematch in the first round.
