ABILENE, Texas -- The LeTourneau volleyball team completed a season sweep of Hardin-Simmons with a 3-1 (16-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-21) win on the road on Friday night in ASC action.
LeTourneau (9-5, 5-3 ASC) moved into a tie for second place in the ASC standings with the win, its second straight road victory this week. The victory also completed a season sweep of Hardin-Simmons (9-4, 4-3 ASC) after the YellowJackets took a five-set win on Sept. 6.
Much like the first meeting between these two teams, Hardin-Simmons took the opening set as the host Cowgirls pulled away for a 25-16 win.
The LeTourneau side swiped the momentum in the second set to even the match. A quick three-point spurt midway through the frame gave the YellowJackets the lead for good as kills from
Hannah Payan and
Kaci Monk made it 14-11. The lead stretched to five three times later in the set before another Monk kill ended the set and tied the score at 1-1.
Monk had 12 kills with a .345 hitting percentage to go along with three blocks and four digs on the night. Payan registered a dobule-double with 14 kills and 14 digs, while
Allison Smith tallied nine kills and six digs.
In the third set, a back-and-forth game saw LeTourneau used a 9-2 run to erase a two-point deficit and grab a 20-17 lead on a combined block from
Alexis Bowen Johnson and Monk. Hardin-Simmons got within 24-23 late, but a Smith kill ended the Cowgirls' rally and gave the YellowJackets the set win.
Hardin-Simmons took a 17-14 lead in the fourth set, but it was another LeTourneau rally that sealed the conference road win. A 6-1 spurt -- which included kills Payan,
Avery Mabery Morgan, and Smith along with a rare kill from
Natalie Davenport -- gave LeTourneau a 20-18 lead. The YellowJackets produced 16 kills and a .349 hitting percentage in the set as
Meghan Womack capped the win with her third kill of the match.
Davenport and
Reina Lawson were once again effective sharing setter duties. Lawson had 23 assists, seven digs, and a match-high three aces while Davenport added 16 assists and nine digs.
Morgan Nix totaled 32 digs and Johnson had four total blocks with three kills.
Hardin-Simmons was led by 15 kills from Aubree McCann and Liz Underwood along with 24 assists from Hannah Huckabee and Ali Meyer. Ari Villanueva recorded 30 digs in the loss.
