Senior Day Success: Volleyball Downs Howard Payne in Four

LONGVIEW, Texas -- The LeTourneau volleyball team honored its three seniors and then won for a second straight day with a 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 20-25, 25-20) victory over Howard Payne on Saturday inside Solheim Arena.

Allison Smith, Morgan Nix, and Faith Keating were all honored before the match for their contributions to the program. Smith is the program's career leader in blocks and hitting percentage, while Nix set single-season and single-match records in digs. All three made an impact in Saturday's match as Nix totaled 26 digs, Smith had six kills and six blocks, and Keating added two aces and seven digs.

LeTourneau (9-11, 6-5 ASC) raced out to a 2-0 match lead with wins in the first two sets. After Howard Payne (10-10, 4-7 ASC) rallied for a third-set win, LeTourneau responded in the fourth.

The YellowJackets got out to a 6-1 lead in the fourth after a kill from Hannah Payan and then used five straight points later in the game to break a 14-14 tie. After Howard Payne cut the margin to one (19-18), LeTourneau got three kills from Yari Ortiz and an ace from Smith to regain a 23-19 edge. Back-to-back kills from Ortiz and Nora Lockhart finished off the match and the victory.

The win completed a season sweep of Howard Payne.

Ortiz had 16 kills, while Kaci Monk had 15 kills and hit .406 in the match. Payan added 12 kills with seven digs. Reina Lawson totaled a career-high 50 assists with 14 digs for her 10th double-double of the year. Lockhart tallied seven kills and three blocks.

LeTourneau had 57 kills and recorded nine blocks as a team.

The YellowJackets had 12 kills in the first set and used a 7-0 run to erase a 19-16 deficit into a 23-19 lead. Payan completed the set comeback with a kill to give the YellowJackets a 1-0 match lead.

In the second, the YellowJackets totaled 15 kills and again used a 7-0 run to go ahead by four (16-12). Lockhart notched her first of two set-clinching kills on the day with hers to end the second game.
