Volleyball Can't Overcome UT Dallas in Loss

RICHARDSON, Texas -- Riding a two-match win streak, the LeTourneau volleyball team could not overcome a slow start in a 3-0 loss (25-17, 25-14, 25-12) at UT Dallas on Tuesday night in ASC play.

The loss snapped a brief two-match win streak for LeTourneau (4-9, 4-3 ASC). The contest was the only one this week for the YellowJackets, who will return home for a non-conference match with Dallas next Tuesday.

Morgan Nix posted 30 digs, just one shy of tying a program record for a three-set match, while Reina Lawson had 18 assists and 14 digs in the defeat. Yari Ortiz had six kills with Allison Smith adding five and two blocks.

Nix's 30 digs were the most by a UT Dallas opponent in a three-set match in Comet program history.

LeTourneau held a 75-66 advantage in digs as Nix led the way. Hannah Payan also chipped in 13 digs.

UT Dallas (4-9, 3-2 ASC) led throughout the first two sets in building a 2-0 match lead. The Comets hit .378 in the first set with 15 kills to just one error and totaled five aces in the frame.

LeTourneau took its first lead of the night at 15-14 in the third set after a UT Dallas error. Lawson tallied a kill on the next rally, one of three for the setter, as the YellowJackets extended the margin to 16-14.

That run prompted a UT Dallas timeout and the Comets responded with three straight to regain the lead. A combination block from Smith and Payan re-tied the set at 18 apiece and another Comet error gave the lead back to LeTourneau at 19-18. The teams traded points until UT Dallas broke a 21-21 tie and scored the final four points to seal the victory.

Bailey Schievelbein had 10 kills and 14 digs, while Erin Rogers had 10 kills to lead the Comets. Emma Sevening added 18 assists.
