SEGUIN, Texas -- The LeTourneau women's basketball team came up just short in its season opener on Wednesday night in a 70-59 loss at Texas Lutheran.
Bailey Broughton scored a game-high 18 points to lead LeTourneau (0-1), while
Future Asevedo and
Kylie Weeks scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Broughton added seven rebounds and two assists and went 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Weeks dished out a team-high six assists.
LeTourneau trailed by 18 (36-18) midway through the second quarter as Texas Lutheran (1-0) used a 16-4 run to begin the period. The YellowJackets trimmed that margin to seven (55-48) by the end of the third quarter.
In the third, LeTourneau outscored the host Bulldogs 22-16. A Broughton steal led to an Asevedo fastbreak layup that capped a 12-1 run and get the YellowJackets within 49-45 late in the third.Â
Early in the fourth, Texas Lutheran stretched the lead back to double-digits and the YellowJackets would not get closer.
Haylee Jordan added eight points and three blocks, while
Mariana Espinosa had a team-high eight rebounds. LeTourneau connected in 38.8 percent (19-of-49) from the field with seven 3-pointers and went 14-of-18 at the foul line.
Brianna Wilson had 16 points with eight rebounds and Kailee Mulkey recorded a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds in the win.
Texas Lutheran was limited to 34.9 percent (24-of-69) and 4-of-21 from deep, but made 18-for-27 at the foul line.

LeTourneau begins the home schedule on Saturday against Southwestern (1 p.m.).
