ALPINE, Texas -- A day after a five-set victory at Howard Payne on the road, the LeTourneau volleyball team had its comeback attempt fall short in a 3-1 loss (25-19, 25-21, 20-25, 26-24) at Sul Ross on Saturday in Alpine.
The match does not count towards league standings as LeTourneau drops to 2-8 overall. Sul Ross (4-7) is in its final year of Division III status as the Lobos move to Division II next year.
Morgan Nix had 37 digs and
Reina Lawson totaled 33 assists, four kills, and five digs in the defeat.
Allison Smith had eight kills with three total blocks (two solo, one assisted) while
Kaci Monk and
Nora Lockhart had seven kills apiece. Lockhart also had a team-high four blocks (two solo, two assisted).
LeTourneau found itself down 2-0 in the match after a pair of close losses in each of the first two sets. Sul Ross totaled 27 kills over the first two frames as the YellowJackets had just 20.
The YellowJackets kept the match alive with a third-set victory. LeTourneau had just nine kills in the game, but the Lobos committed 10 attack errors to aid the guests. Three straight points that included a kill from Smith and two Lobo errors gave LeTourneau a 12-10 lead and the YellowJackets led the rest of the way for the 25-20 win. Lockhart had the set-clinching kill.
In the fourth, LeTourneau surged ahead 8-3 following four straight Lobo errors after a kill from Smith. The lead grew to 14-7 moments later after a Lockhart kill and the YellowJackets had a 24-18 lead with a chance to send it into a fifth frame.
Sul Ross had other plans, though. Eight straight points from the Lobos erased LeTourneau's lead and Sul Ross eked out a 26-24 victory to take the match.
Loren Garcia had 13 kills with Daniella Garcia and Sarah Chavez tallying 12 each in the win.Â
