Liebengood Leads Surging Men's Hoops Past Howard Payne

LONGVIEW, Texas -- Down 11 in the first half, the LeTourneau men's basketball team went on a 14-0 run to end the period and continued the surge through the second half in a 92-79 victory over visiting Howard Payne in ASC play on Thursday night inside Solheim Arena.

Caedmon Liebengood poured in 25 points and a career-high 18 rebounds in the win as LeTourneau (8-5, 4-2 ASC) won its second straight game and the fourth in the last five overall.

The YellowJackets were stymied on offense for much of the first half and trailed Howard Payne (8-6, 3-4 ASC), 36-25, after a five-minute scoring drought. Over the final four-plus minutes of the first half LeTourneau turned it on and rattled off 14 straight points to end the period. Branson Lynn hit two 3-pointers during the stretch and a Christian Adams steal and layup capped the run to give the YellowJackets a 39-36 lead at the half.

That momentum carried into the second half as LeTourneau shot 57 percent (20-of-35) and built a 21-point lead late in the game.

Walker Blaine had 17 points, nine rebounds, and three assists while Adams added 15 points and six assists with two blocks and four rebounds. Teigan Edwards and Lynn each had 12 points as Edwards scored 10 points in the second half and Lynn buried three of LeTourneau's 11 triples on the night. Edwards also added seven rebounds and four assists.

The YellowJackets made 11 3-pointers, marking the second straight game LeTourneau has made double-digit treys. LeTourneau also continued its run of outstanding free-throw shooting with an 11-of-13 effort on the night, aided by Edwards going 8-of-10. The YellowJackets are shooting 82.3 percent as a team at the free throw line over the last six games (77-of-93).

LeTourneau also cleaned up on the glass as it held a 50-32 advantage and had 15 second-chance points on 16 offensive rebounds.

On the night, LeTourneau made 46.7 percent (35-of-75) from the field.

Howard Payne was led by 25 points from Hudson Johnson and 13 from Ben Phillip. The visitors connected on 41.5 percent (27-of-65) for the game and just 7-of-21 from deep.
