BELTON, Texas -- A first half goal and the LeTourneau men's soccer team held off a charge from Mary Hardin-Baylor to earn a 1-1 draw in ASC action on Thursday night in Belton.
It was the first positive result for LeTourneau (4-3-4, 1-1-2 ASC) at Mary Hardin-Baylor since a victory in 2005. The result marked the second tie in the last four matches between the YellowJackets and UMHB (5-5-2, 2-0-1 ASC).
LeTourneau got on the board first in the 34th minute. The YellowJackets earned a corner kick and
Diego Enriquez's play into the box just went over the head of
Caleb Bransford and the Crusaders back line ended up directing the ball into the net for an own goal. The score was initially credited to Bransford, but adjusted to a UMHB own goal.Â
After the teams were neck-and-neck statistically through the first 45 minutes, UMHB turned the pressure up on the YellowJackets in the second half.
The host Crusaders found the equalizer in the 62nd minute when Peyton Hoyt put away his shot, assisted by Chase Cherrington, to make it 1-1.
Despite several chances over the final 25 minutes of play, UMHB could not find another goal.
Edson Camara Martinez and the LeTourneau back line held strong to come away with one point in the ASC standings.
Camara Martinez made a career-high-tying nine saves in his 90 minutes of work at the net, with five of those saves coming in the second half.Â
Hayden Owens made four saves for UMHB as the Crusaders outshot LeTourneau, 22-8.
