Women's Hoops Suffers Loss at Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Future Asevedo had 15 points and Mariana Espinosa added 11, but the LeTourneau women's basketball team could not overcome Southwestern in a 61-53 loss on Wednesday afternoon.

Asevedo went 8-of-8 from the free throw line as LeTourneau shot 74.1 percent (20-of-27) from the line. The sophomore added three steals and three rebounds. Espinosa, the reigning ASC Player of the Week, tallied 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists.

LeTourneau (1-6) suffered through a cold spell from the field in the second quarter and fell behind by 11 (34-23) at the break. The YellowJackets led 13-10 at the end of the first after finishing the period on a 6-0 run sparked by a bucket from Makenzie Covey and a 3-pointer from Kylie Weeks.

Southwestern (2-4) outscored the YellowJackets, 24-10, in the second as the Pirates connected on 60 percent from field and hit four 3-pointers to gain a double-digit lead.

LeTourneau shot 50 percent from the field in the first quarter, but could not regain that touch throughout the game.

Southwestern stretched the lead to 16 (40-24) early in the third quarter before LeTourneau trimmed the margin to nine (46-37) after a Sallie Moser jumper in the final minute of the period. The YellowJackets got within five (48-43) after a pair of Asevedo free throws with 6:37 left in the fourth, but that was as close as the visitors would get.

Weeks and LaTerra Satcher had five points apiece, while Satcher added four rebounds. Sara Savage grabbed a team-high six rebounds and Brooklyn Iman totaled five boards.

Trinity Benitez had a double-double of 11 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Pirates, while Adrianna McCoy had 18 points.
