Big Fourth Quarter Lifts Women's Hoops to Victory at Daytona Beach Shootout

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- LeTourneau women's hoops used a big fourth quarter to take their first game of the Daytona Beach Shootout over Lycoming, 60-47, on Friday morning.

The YellowJackets (5-7) outscored the Warriors (1-8) in the fourth quarter, 24-8, while also holding Lycoming to just 27.7 percent shooting overall and forcing 21 Warrior turnovers.

Kylie Weeks had 13 points to lead all scorers, while Mariana Espinosa added 12 points and a career-high seven assists. Sara Savage set a career-high in rebounds with 10 and added two blocks. Future Asevedo aided the defensive effort with five steals, which was her career-best mark in that category.

A low-scoring first quarter saw the LeTourneau defense hold Lycoming to just 3-of-18 (16.7 percent) from the field. LaTerra Satcher got off to a great start offensively in this quarter, scoring four points and hitting both of her field goal attempts. However, the Warriors would hold a 9-8 advantage at the end of one.

The YellowJackets re-took the lead early in the second quarter, with Savage hitting a layup and Asevedo hitting a 3-pointer to make the lead four points. Then, back-to-back 3-pointers from Espinosa and Savannah Scruggs extended the lead to eight later in the period. After an ensuing 8-0 Lycoming run, Weeks hit a three and Caitlyn Stanley added a free throw to give LeTourneau a four-point halftime advantage.

As the third quarter began, Lycoming began to find some rhythm, going on a 15-2 run to assume a nine-point lead with 5:35 remaining in the quarter. LeTourneau would mount a response, though, outscoring the Warriors 11-5 the rest of the quarter and closing the deficit to three points.

As the fourth quarter loomed large, it seemed that the game would come down to the wire.

It didn't.

The YellowJackets opened the quarter with an astounding 13-0 stretch, with Espinosa, Asevedo, Satcher, and Makenzie Covey doing the scoring. That stretch was too much for the Warriors to overcome, as LeTourneau continued to keep their foot on the gas pedal, getting their lead as high as 17 points in that amazing fourth quarter.

Ashley Yoh led Lycoming in scoring with 12 points and rebounds with 11. Mya Wetzel also added five steals for the Warriors.
