ALPINE, Texas --
Mariana Espinosa,
Bailey Broughton, and
Kylie Weeks all scored in double-figures, but the LeTourneau women's basketball team could not overcome a second-quarter surge from host Sul Ross State in a 74-62 loss on Thursday night in Alpine.
The loss for LeTourneau does not count towards league standings as Sul Ross transitions to Division II.
Espinosa scored a career-high 16 points, Broughton had 12 points, and Weeks added 11 points in the loss. It was the second straight game Espinosa had topped her career-high in points. Broughton hit 6-of-8 from the free throw line and dished out three assists with four rebounds, while Weeks added two steals and two assists.
Haylee Jordan totaled seven points, nine rebounds, and two steals. Jordan did not record a blocked shot, halting an impressive 34-game streak where she registered at least one block dating back to last season.
Sul Ross (8-15) took control of the game in the second quarter. Leading by two entering into the second quarter, the host Lobos outscored LeTourneau 22-12 in the period to take a 35-23 lead into the half.
A Jordan bucket with three minutes left in the third brought LeTourneau to within 44-39, but the Lobos stretched the margin back to 10 (54-44) entering the fourth. The YellowJackets cut the deficit under 10 twice in the fourth, but Sul Ross pulled away for the home win.
LeTourneau (5-17) shot 44 percent (22-of-50) from the field -- its best mark of the season -- while hitting 15-of-18 at the free throw line. The YellowJackets totaled 35 rebounds as Jordan had nine and
Allie Buchanan collected six.
Marley Rokas had a game-high 21 points and Victoria Aguayo had a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Lobos made 38.1 percent (24-of-63), but converted 26-of-35 from the foul line.
