Men's Soccer Nets Draw with Concordia in Home Opener

LONGVIEW, Texas -- The LeTourneau men's soccer team opened its 2024 home schedule with a 1-1 draw against Concordia Texas on Thursday night at the Joyce Family Athletic Village.

LeTourneau (1-2-2) got a first half goal from Ethan Carrillo and held that lead for much of the match before a free-kick score from Concordia (1-0-3) evened the match late in the second half.

It was the third draw in the last five matches between the two programs, playing in a non-conference match as Concordia left the ASC to become a member of the SCAC this season.

The YellowJackets controlled play through the first 20 minutes of the match and took advantage in the 10th minute. Jonas Coyle's pass into the box caught a foot of Garrett Thom who has his directional kick blocked by a Concordia defender. Carrillo was there to collect the loose ball and knocked it into the net for the score.

The goal was the first of Carrillo's collegiate career. LeTourneau took that 1-0 lead into the break.

In the second half, Concordia turned the pressure up and the visiting Tornados capitalized in the 74th minute.

After a foul outside the box, Gustavo Hernandez's free kick from 30 yards out got past LeTourneau keeper Edson Camara Martinez and found the back of the net to even the score. The goal was the first allowed by the YellowJackets in three matches.

Concordia took eight of its 13 shots in the match over the final 45 minutes, but the YellowJackets preserved the 1-1 draw.

Camara Martinez made five saves in the contest, while Concordia keeper Leo Reyes made two saves. Thom led LeTourneau with two of its seven shots on the night.
