Men's Soccer Dominates in 2-0 Victory Over Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss. -- The LeTourneau men's soccer team finished their early season road trip on Saturday, dominating in a 2-0 victory over Millsaps. LeTourneau was in command from the opening whistle on Harper Davis Field, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead, with both goals coming in the first half.

LeTourneau (1-2-1) and Millsaps (0-3-0) battled out of the gate, both creating some early scoring chances. But a heads up play by Caleb Nelson put the YellowJackets up 1-0. Taking advantage of a wayward pass by a Millsaps defender, Nelson sprinted to intercept the pass, giving him the perfect avenue to score his first goal of the season. This heads up goal was number six in the sophomore's career as he tallied five last season for LeTourneau. Nelson was tied for the lead in goals scored for the YellowJackets in his freshman season.

LeTourneau wasted no time in adding on to their lead, as Garrett Thom would score the second goal for the YellowJackets just two minutes after the first. Thom scored his first goal of the season, number six on his career, in the 35th minute. Thom was able to take advantage of his dynamic speed, sprinting past the Majors defense to create a one-on-one opportunity with the opposing keeper Michael Hamauei. Thom took advantage of this chance, chipping it just over Hamauei's outstretched arms and into the back of the net.  Thom was assisted by Bridger Roberdeau, who was able to thread a sharp pass past the defenders and create a brilliant chance for his forward.

Edson Camara Martinez put together his second consecutive shutout between the posts for the YellowJackets, notching three saves in the victory. Camara Martinez and the LeTourneau back-line have been too much for opposing offenses to handle as they have not allowed a goal in four consecutive periods. The back-line did an excellent job protecting their keeper as the Majors were able to put just four shots on goal, all of which were turned away by Camara Martinez.

The YellowJackets remained in control after taking the first half lead as they continued to pressure the Millsaps defense in the second half, drawing three yellow cards. LeTourneau attacked relentlessly in the second half seeking to add on to their lead.

Hogan Payne led Millspas with three shots, one on goal.
