Women's Hoops Can't Hold First Half Lead in Loss at UMHB

BELTON, Texas -- The LeTourneau women's basketball team held a 10-point lead in the first quarter and took a lead into halftime before host Mary Hardin-Baylor rallied for a 60-47 win over the YellowJackets in ASC action on Saturday inside the Mayborn Campus Center.

LeTourneau (7-12, 1-2 ASC) limited UMHB to just 18.8 percent shooting in the first period and built a 17-7 lead. Kylie Weeks drained a pair of 3-pointers in the opening period and finished with a game-high 20 points with four 3-pointers.

The YellowJackets held a lead throughout the first half. Despite a cold shooting effort in the second quarter, LeTourneau still held a 25-21 advantage entering the halftime break.

UMHB (12-6, 1-1 ASC) used a 17-0 run over the final few minutes of the second quarter into the third quarter to take the lead for good. A free throw from Adyson James gave the host Cru their first lead at 26-25 with 7:41 left in the third.

The Cru stretched the lead into double figures later in the third and LeTourneau would not be able to slice into the deficit.

Mariana Espinosa joined Weeks in double-digit scoring as she tallied 14 points with six steals and three rebounds. Future Asevedo added eight points with three assists and four rebounds. Sara Savage grabbed nine rebounds while LaTerra Satcher added five boards.

LeTourneau made seven 3-pointers, led by four from Weeks and two from Espinosa. Overall, the YellowJackets connected on 30.2 percent (16-of-53) from the field and went 8-of-12 from the free throw line.

UMHB put four players in double-figure scoring led by 13 points apiece from Rachel Okoye and Katelen Brooks. After a tough shooting start, the Cru finished the game making 33.8 percent (22-of-65) with five 3-pointers and an 11-of-19 effort from the foul line.
