LONGVIEW, Texas --
Henry Shore scored the match-tying goal in the 67th minute, but a 75th minute strike from Centenary gave the visiting Gents a 2-1 victory over the LeTourneau men's soccer team in SCAC action on Friday night.
LeTourneau (2-4-5, 1-2-2 SCAC) trailed by a goal entering the second half, but used a burst of momentum through the first 20 minutes of the second period to break through and even the score.
The YellowJackets took 16 shots in the second half and tied the score in the 67th minute. Off a strong throw-in from
Caleb Nelson into the box, the ball ricocheted between two Centenary defenders and found the foot of Shore who rocketed his attempt into the net.
The goal was Shore's team-leading third of the year.
Despite the strong challenge from the YellowJackets over the final 45 minutes, Centenary (5-5-2, 3-2-0 SCAC) had the final answer. Lochlan Scott got loose inside the box and his initial shot was saved by
Carson Gamble, but the ball deflected right to Aidan Miller who put it away for the match-winner in the 75th minute.
LeTourneau pressured the Gents over the final 15 minutes, taking seven shots but could not find the equalizer. The YellowJackets held a 20-14 shot advantage led by four from Nelson and three each from
Nate Bransford and
Karsten Guerra.
Hayden McConnell gave Centenary the lead in the 23rd minute with his first goal of the year. The Gents out-shot LeTourneau, 6-4, in the opening half.
Gamble made five saves for LeTourneau, while Centenary keeper Casey Clemo had six.
