CONWAY, Ark. -- The LeTourneau men's soccer team outshot Hendrix and scored an equalizing goal in the 57th minute, but an 84th minute strike from the host Warriors downed the YellowJackets 2-1 in SCAC action on a rainy Sunday afternoon in Conway.
The loss drops LeTourneau to 5-6-5 overall and 4-4-2 in SCAC play. The YellowJackets have one regular season match left with SCAC Tournament implications on the line.
The YellowJackets trailed 1-0 at the half and ramped up the pressure in the second half to tally 11 shots, including a game-tying goal.
Caleb Nelson notched his third goal of the season in the 57th minute to even the score at 1-1. The junior took a free kick from 30 yards out and ripped it past Hendrix keeper Gregorio Medina for the score.
LeTourneau had a couple of other good looks in the second half, but could not capitalize.
Instead, it was Hendrix (7-8-2, 6-3-1 SCAC) getting the final answer. Following a corner kick in the 84th minute, Joseph Avila scored the go-ahead goal for the Warriors to make it 2-1. It was Avila's first goal of the season.
The YellowJackets put two more shots on frame in the final minutes -- one by Nelson and another by
Nate Bransford -- but Medina made stops on both to halt the rally.
Josh Montgomery put Hendrix ahead 1-0 in the 15th minute with his eighth goal of the season, assisted by Avila.
LeTourneau held a 15-8 shot advantage as Nelson led the way with three attempts.
Edson Camara Martinez made four saves at the net for LeTourneau, while Medina made eight for Hendrix.
