Men's Soccer Keeps Postseason Chances Alive with Win at Austin

SHERMAN, Texas -- Elias Arreguin's goal in the 57th minute broke a tie and held up the rest of the way as the LeTourneau men's soccer team earned a 2-1 win at Austin College on Friday night in the regular season finale.

The win for LeTourneau (6-6-5, 5-4-2 SCAC) keeps the YellowJackets' postseason chances alive. LeTourneau will earn a spot in the SCAC Tournament next week if St. Thomas wins or draws against Centenary on Saturday night in Houston. If that occurs, LeTourneau would be the No. 6 seed in the tournament, which begins next Thursday in Round Rock, Texas.

To get to that point, LeTourneau needed a win on Friday night and the YellowJackets did just that.

With the score knotted at 1-1 early in the second half, Arreguin put the YellowJackets ahead for good. The freshman notched his second goal of the season, assisted by Caleb Nelson, in the 57th minute to make it a 2-1 score.

From there, the defense limited the chances for the host Roos. Austin took just five shots after LeTourneau's goal, but only one needed to be saved by keeper Edson Camara Martinez as he hauled in Matheus Braid's attempt in the 87th minute.

Camara Martinez made two saves on the night.

LeTourneau grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute when Bridge Mwambukiri found the back of the net, assisted by Nelson and Arreguin. The goal was Mwambukiri's second of the year and Nelson picked up two assists in the match to extend his team-best total to six.

Austin College (7-6-3, 6-3-2 SCAC) -- which already clinched a spot in the SCAC Tournament -- evened the score in the 28th minute on an unassisted goal from Luis Garza-Rios.

Austin College held a 12-10 shot advantage in the match, but both teams had three on target. Patrick Bassett made one save at the net for the Roos.

UP NEXT

LeTourneau will await its fate on Saturday night with the St. Thomas-Centenary match for a spot in the SCAC Tournament. The SCAC Tournament is set for Nov. 6-7, 9 in Round Rock, Texas.
