Career Days from Smith, Mullin Propel Volleyball to a 3-1 Victory

SEGUIN, Texas -- Emma Smith and Emily Mullin created a whirlwind of problems for the Concordia Texas Tornados as the LeTourneau volleyball team won, 3-1 (15-25, 25-12, 27-25, 25-19), in SCAC action on Sunday in Seguin.

Smith erupted for a career-high 18 kills in the match with zero attack errors and an extremely efficient .426 hitting percentage. Smith's 18 kills match a season-high for any YellowJacket this season.

Mullin had herself a day. With career-high 10 kills (.409), 17 assists, and career-high 16 digs, Mullin marks the first triple-double in the program's 25-point era.

Sunday's match featured another pair of career-highs as well, with Kaylyn Taylor's 17 digs and Elyse McKinney's 28 digs.

Concordia (9-8, 2-5 SCAC) would handle the first set fairly well. With a 16-13 lead, the Tornados would pull off a 9-2 run to close out the first set and take a 1-0 lead.

However, it was all YellowJacket from there on out.

LeTourneau (11-7, 3-3 SCAC) easily took care of the second set, 25-12. The YellowJackets would close out the second set on an emphatic 12-2 run, highlighted by four kills from Smith.

In a decisive third set, Concordia led 16-8 with all the momentum on their side.

The YellowJackets had other plans.

Piece by piece, LeTourneau would chip away at the lead. Four and three-point runs would slowly bring the YellowJackets back into set.

On the ropes, down 23-19, LeTourneau would rattle off a five-point run to take its first lead of the set.

A pair of kills from the Tornados would put LeTourneau in danger once again, but back-to-back kills from Smith and a bad set by Concordia would give the YellowJackets a 2-1 lead.

With a chance to put the match away in an 18-18 tie, the YellowJackets closed the door with a 7-1 run, capping off a thrilling victory.

Concordia was headlined by Brooklynne Fitzgerald, who amassed 13 kills and 15 digs.
