LONGVIEW, Texas -- History was made inside Solheim Arena on Saturday afternoon as LeTourneau volleyball picked up a critical 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 27-25) sweep over the Austin College Kangaroos.
Not only did this victory keep the YellowJackets' postseason hopes alive, but it also moved head coach
Alison Williams to the top of the program's all-time coaching wins list.
The YellowJackets (16-11, 7-7 SCAC) were once again led by
Aubree McCann. After a season-best performance just 24 hours ago, the senior produced a dozen kills in the sweep, to accompany a pair of blocks.
Nora Lockhart followed suit, matching her performance last night with 10 kills on an absurd .563 hitting percentage.
Emma Smith followed with nine kills (.261).
Maddy Hirneise garnered 21 digs in the contest, while
Emily Mullin had a team-high 20 assists.
LeTourneau started the match off with emphasis, opening up with an 8-3 run, including five straight, and four of the Jackets' first nine points came thanks to kills by McCann.
The Roos (16-10, 9-4 SCAC) would fight to bring the match competitive again, but before Austin could take the lead, LeTourneau would run off five straight to open up a 20-13 lead.
It seemed like LeTourneau would run away with the set, but the Kangaroos would rattle off seven straight to tie the set 21-21.
The final four points for the YellowJackets came from Austin College mistakes, and the Jackets would take a 1-0 set lead.
The second set was a different story, though, as the Kangaroos held an early 9-7 lead.
Nevertheless, the YellowJackets would answer with emphasis, securing seven straight points and a lead they would not relinquish, as the Jackets took the set 25-18.
The third set would be cinematic, as momentum seesawed back and forth the entirety of the set, which featured four separate runs of four or more points.
LeTourneau would win the race to 15, and hold a slim 16-14 lead. Austin would respond with a 6-1 run, and with a 20-17 lead, it seemed a fourth set was inevitable.
However, the YellowJackets would secure the next six points, and a Kangaroos service error gave the team match point.
Austin would take advantage of three straight LeTourneau mistakes to force extra points.
With the match on the line at 25-25, a kill from Smith would give the Jackets their third match point, and McCann would close the door and secure the season sweep of the division rival.
The Roos would be led by Samantha Graham with eight kills (.280) and a block.
