LONGVIEW, Texas -- LeTourneau women's basketball outscored the College of Biblical Studies Ambassadors 25-11 in the fourth quarter to earn their first victory of the season, 71-50, inside Solheim Arena on Saturday night.
Mariana Espinosa picked up her second career double-double en route to the win, dropping 15 points on 6-of-11 from the field and securing 10 boards.
Kylie Weeks led the team in scoring with 17 points, including a perfect 3-of-3 from downtown. Weeks also nabbed six rebounds and was a menace defensively, collecting six steals.
Makenzie Covey followed with 16 points, on a respectable 53% shooting percentage. Additionally,
Brooklyn Iman had seven points and eight boards off the bench.
As a team, the YellowJackets took advantage of 31 Biblical Studies turnovers, scoring 24 points off of them, along with 14 second chance points.
Espinosa got the game underway with a first-possession bucket, and after an Ambassador layup, Weeks drilled her first three of the contest.
The opening quarter featured a long run of defense, with the score at a standstill for 3:06 before Weeks knocked down a pair of free throws.
Back-and-forth ensued, and LeTourneau (1-1) was the first to put together a run, capped off by
Kaylin Cervantes' first career bucket to extend the lead to 13-8.
The Ambassadors (0-6) ended the quarter with a pair of baskets in the final minutes to cut the lead to one.
The second quarter saw more of the same defensive efforts, as neither team could gain much momentum.
Biblical Studies would control the start of the second half, outscoring LeTourneau 13-8 and cutting the lead to 38-37 with 2:23 remaining in the quarter.
The YellowJackets would answer, though, extending the lead back to six to enter the final quarter.
Once the fourth began, everything clicked for the YellowJackets.
Iman was able to get to the line early and sink them both, followed by a Covey steal-and-score to get the lead to double digits with 9:23 remaining.
In the next four minutes, LeTourneau saw every made basket answered in some way by the Ambassadors, refusing to be put away.
However, the final 4:59 was all YellowJackets, as the team outscored Biblical Studies 15-2 to close out the game.
Deja El-Amin led the Ambassadors with 14 points in the contest.
