SHREVEPORT, La. -- The LeTourneau volleyball team easily dispatched Centenary and Rhodes in a pair of sweeps on Saturday morning to conclude the regular season inside the Gold Dome in Shreveport.
LeTourneau (19-11, 9-7 SCAC) then had to wait for its SCAC Tournament fate needing a Texas Lutheran loss at Colorado College. The YellowJackets got their wish as Colorado College reverse swept Texas Lutheran to seal a spot in the SCAC Tournament for LeTourneau.
The YellowJackets will be the No. 6 seed in the tournament, which begins play on Friday in Kerrville, Texas.
With the two wins, LeTourneau also broke a program NCAA-era record for wins in a season with 19. It is the second-most victories all-time (20, 1987).
MATCH ONE: LeTourneau 3, Centenary 0
LeTourneau hit .304 led by
Aubree McCann's 14 kills as the YellowJackets cruised past Centenary in three sets (25-16, 25-15, 25-17) in Saturday's opener.
McCann had 14 kills with a .423 hitting percentage, while
Emma Smith added eight kills. LeTourneau totaled 41 kills with a .304 hitting percentage.
Emily Mullin had 22 assists and
Maddy Hirneise led the back row with 12 digs.
Ashlyn Walther had four kills and five total blocks.
LeTourneau hit .375 with 15 kills in a first-set win. A 5-0 run broke open a tight score and gave LeTourneau a 21-14 lead after a Smith kill. LeTourneau finished the set with four straight, including two kills from McCann and an ace from
Hailee Perry.
In the second, LeTourneau opened up a 9-4 lead and extended the margin to 10 (20-10) after a block from Smith and
Amya Orn to cruise to a 2-0 match lead.Â
It was more of the same in the third as LeTourneau hit over .300 in the set and took an early lead en route to a 25-17 victory and the sweep.
The win completed a season sweep of Centenary (3-22, 2-14 SCAC).
MATCH TWO: LeTourneau 3, Rhodes 0
An even better hitting match ensued for LeTourneau in the second contest as the YellowJackets hit .319 with 42 kills in a sweep of Rhodes (25-10, 25-18, 25-19).
Kaylyn Taylor had a match-high 11 kills as she hit .556, with Smith adding 10 kills.
Nora Lockhart had seven kills and an .875 hitting percentage, while McCann totaled seven kills.
Mullin added 21 assists and five kills and Perry contributed 11 assists. Walther had another five-block performance and Smith added four. Hirneise totaled 16 digs.
LeTourneau dominated the first set using a 12-1 run to take a 20-7 lead. Mullin had three kills during the key run and added another at the end of the set to give the YellowJackets the win. LeTourneau hit .560 during the set.
The YellowJackets opened the second with a 9-1 run, capped by a block from Lockhart and Smith. Rhodes cut the lead to 14-11 later, but LeTourneau stretched the margin back to seven (19-12) following a Lockhart kill. Walther secured the set with a kill.
LeTourneau finished the sweep in the third with a late run. The YellowJackets secured three straight points to go ahead 18-14 and never looked back to complete the sweep.
LeTourneau limited Rhodes (10-20) to a .038 hitting percentage and held an 8-6 edge in total blocks.
UP NEXT
LeTourneau begins the SCAC Tournament on Friday in Kerrville. Time and opponent of the quarterfinal match will be announced following the end of the SCAC regular season on Sunday.
