Volleyball Sweeps Saturday Tri-Match

FLOWOOD, Miss. -- Backed by the two best hitting percentages of the season, the LeTourneau volleyball team swept its two matches on Saturday with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-15) victory over LaGrange before taking down Belhaven 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-20) in Flowood.

LeTourneau (8-4) hit .341 with 38 kills in the win over LaGrange before tallying 40 kills and a .318 hitting percentage in the victory over Belhaven. Aubree McCann had 19 kills on the day, while Nora Lockhart had 13 with zero errors.

MATCH ONE: LeTourneau 3, LaGrange 0

LeTourneau totaled 38 kills with a .341 hitting percentage, led by eight kills from Aubree McCann and seven from Emily Mullin, to sweep LaGrange 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-15) in Saturday's opener.

The YellowJackets dominated throughout, never trailing in the contest en route to the sweep. It was the second time this season LeTourneau defeated LaGrange (3-12).

McCann had eight kills (.412 percentage) with seven aces and nine digs in the win, while Emily Mullin added seven kills, 11 assists, and five digs. Nora Lockhart produced six kills with a .750 hitting percentage and Hailee Perry added 17 assists. Maddy Hirneise led the back row with 13 digs.

LeTourneau used an 8-0 run in the first set to break open a 14-5 lead after four consecutive aces from McCann. LaGrange chipped away at the margin, but the YellowJackets kept the Panthers at bay and a kill from Emma Smith ended the set.

In the second, LeTourneau scored the first six points and led 9-1 after an ace from Hirneise. The lead stretched to 18-5 later in the set as the YellowJackets cruised to a 25-14 win.

LeTourneau finished the sweep with a 25-15 win in the third, outscoring the Panthers 12-4 down the stretch. A kill from Ashlyn Walther capped an 8-0 run to end the match.

Smith added five kills for LeTourneau with Logan Lear, Walther, and Kylee Marksberry tallying four apiece. Lear also collected three aces as LeTourneau had 14 in the match.

MATCH TWO: LeTourneau 3, Belhaven 0

McCann and Kaylyn Taylor combined for 21 kills as LeTourneau completed the perfect day with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-20) win over Belhaven.

McCann had 11 kills, three aces, and five digs in the win while Taylor added 10 kills and two aces. Taylor had a .421 hitting percentage on 19 attempts. Lockhart totaled seven kills with an .875 hitting percentage and finished the day without an attack error. Smith added six kills and two blocks.

Mullin led the way with 15 assists to go with four kills, two blocks, and four digs. Perry added 11 assists and 11 digs. Hirneise finished with 12 digs.

The YellowJackets posted 14 kills and a .313 hitting percentage in a first-set win. A 6-1 run early in the frame gave LeTourneau the lead for good and the YellowJackets held off the Blazers late in the set. LeTourneau scored the final four points of the set, capped by a combination block from Mullin and Walther.

An 8-1 run was the key in a second-set victory. A kill from Taylor capped that run and gave LeTourneau a 16-8 lead and LeTourneau seized control the match. Back-to-back kills from Lockhart ended the set and gave the YellowJackets a 2-0 match lead.

In the third, LeTourneau hit a match-best .385 with 12 kills to complete the sweep. The first five points went to the YellowJackets as they never trailed in the frame. Belhaven (4-9) tied the match at 10-10, but a 6-0 run from LeTourneau -- ended with a kill from Taylor -- was the momentum the YellowJackets needed to regain the lead and finish the sweep.

LeTourneau tallied 40 kills with a .318 hitting percentage in the match and added 10 aces.
