Strong First Quarter Can't Hold Up in Women's Hoops Loss

ABILENE, Texas -- A one-point lead at the end of the first quarter, punctuated by a Sallie Moser halfcourt buzzer-beater, could not not hold up the rest of the way as the LeTourneau women's basketball team fell to McMurry, 82-49, on Sunday inside Kimbrell Arena.

LeTourneau (4-9, 1-3 SCAC) led 22-21 at the end of the first period as Moser drained a halfcourt heave at the buzzer. That one-point margin was LeTourneau's only lead of the game as McMurry (10-3, 4-0 SCAC) pulled away over the final three quarters.

Kylie Weeks led LeTourneau with 12 points and four assists with four rebounds. Mariana Espinosa had eight points and five rebounds, while Robbi Martinez contributed seven points. Fayth Fry came off the bench to score six points and collect seven rebounds.

The YellowJackets connected on 50 percent (8-of-16) in the opening quarter, including four 3-pointers. McMurry raced out to a 17-7 lead in the period before LeTourneau used a 15-4 run over the final four-plus minutes to take the lead.

A triple from Espinosa started the first-quarter run as she had five points during the streak. Taylor Brown hit a mid-range jumper to get the YellowJackets within two before a defensive stop led to Moser's attempt from halfcourt splashed the net as the buzzer sounded to give LeTourneau a 22-21 lead. McMurry flexed its muscle in the second quarter and quickly regained the lead and extended it into halftime. The War Hawks outscored LeTourneau 19-8 in the period to take a 40-30 lead into halftime.

McMurry then scored the first eight points of the third and cruised from there to take the SCAC win. The War Hawks remain undefeated in conference play.

LeTourneau made six 3-pointers, but shot 25 percent (17-of-68) overall. McMurry connected on 46.6 percent (34-of-73) but made only 1-of-18 from 3-point land.

LeTourneau held its two opponents on the weekend trip to 2-of-36 from 3-point land.

The War Hawks received a game-high 29 points from SCAC leading scorer Helana Chadwick. Chadwick also had nine rebounds and six assists. Aryana Cleveland added a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds.
