Women's Hoops Battles, But Suffers Loss at Austin College

SHERMAN, Texas -- Sallie Moser scored a career-high 15 points, but the LeTourneau women's basketball team came up short in a 64-53 loss at Austin College on Saturday in SCAC action in Sherman.

Moser knocked down a career-high four 3-pointers and totaled a career-best 15 points with two assists in the loss for LeTourneau (4-11, 1-5 SCAC).

Playing Austin College for the first time this season, the team picked to win the SCAC Blue Division, LeTourneau hung with the host Roos through the first half.

A slow start saw LeTourneau trail 14-8 at the end of the first quarter, but the YellowJackets connected on 53.8 percent (7-of-13) in the second to stay within striking distance. Much of that was aided by Moser as she scored six straight points over a minute-long stretch to get LeTourneau within 16-14 after a conventional three-point play with 6:23 left. Moser had nine points in the second quarter alone.

The YellowJackets climbed to within one (28-27) after a Robbi Martinez 3-pointer with 1:25 left in the period. Back-to-back buckets late in the quarter from Austin College extended the hosts' lead to 33-27 at the break.

Austin College (7-8, 4-2 SCAC) created separation in the third quarter. The Roos went up 40-29 on a Brooklyn Matthews layup at the 5:23 mark of the period and led by 17 later on before grabbing a 14-point edge heading into the fourth.

LeTourneau hung around as the YellowJackets trimmed the deficit to 10 (58-48) on a Makenzie Covey jumper with 5:48 left in the game, but that was as close as it got the rest of the way.

Martinez finished with eight points and five rebounds, while Mariana Espinosa had six points with four rebounds and four assists. Kaylin Cervantes added nine points and five rebounds and Madeline Underwood contributed six points and five boards.

LeTourneau connected on 40 percent (20-of-50) from the field with seven 3-pointers.

Lexi Martin and Trinity Williams had 14 points each, while Matthews had 14 rebounds with six points. The Roos managed 41 percent (25-of-61) from the field.
