LONGVIEW, Texas -- Never trailing in the game, the LeTourneau women's basketball team snapped its losing streak with a 78-69 win over Dallas on Friday night inside Solheim Arena.
Kylie Weeks led four LeTourneau players in double-figure scoring with 19 points to go along with four assists and four steals.
Fayth Fry had a season-high-tying 13 points with five rebounds and
Mariana Espinosa notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Robbi Martinez also had 12 points with six rebounds.
The double-double for Espinosa was her third this season.
LeTourneau (5-12, 2-6 SCAC) led from the jump as a
Sallie Moser bucket on the YellowJackets' first possession of the game gave the home side a lead they would not relinquish. A Weeks steal and subsequent fastbreak layup from Espinosa capped a 10-2 spurt to begin the game.
The first-quarter lead stretched to 10 (26-16) after a three-point play from Fry with 56 seconds left in the period. LeTourneau made 50 percent (10-of-20) from the field in the opening quarter to lead 26-18 entering the second.
Dallas (3-14, 2-6 SCAC) chipped away at the YellowJackets' lead in the second, but LeTourneau still held a 41-37 lead into halftime.
In the third, LeTourneau turned up the pressure and stretched the lead back to double-digits. The YellowJackets forced seven turnovers in the period -- including back-to-back shot clock violations -- and held Dallas to 23.1 percent shooting from the field.
That defensive presence enabled LeTourneau to outscore Dallas, 20-8, in the period and take the largest lead of the night at 16 (61-45) after a pair of Weeks free throws with 1:29 left.
Dallas made a run late in the fourth quarter to cut the LeTourneau lead to three (72-69) with two minutes left, but the YellowJackets responded. LeTourneau used great passing on two straight possessions that led to layups from Martinez and Fry to extend the lead to 76-69 with 1:07 left. After a Dallas miss, Martinez ran the floor and Espinosa found her for a fastbreak layup to seal the win with 38 seconds left.
LeTourneau forced 18 turnovers in the win and converted those into 26 points. The YellowJackets shot 43.1 percent (31-of-72) from the field with five 3-pointers and 11-of-15 at the line. LeTourneau had 17 assists on 31 made field goals, led by Espinosa's five.
Makenzie Covey,
Kaylin Cervantes, and Moser each had six points for the YellowJackets.
Dallas received 14 points and 16 rebounds from Lexi Arzate, while Gabriella Barrera had 20 points and five assists. The Crusaders connected on 36.2 percent (25-of-69) from the field.
