LONGVIEW, Texas -- The LeTourneau women's basketball team played right with SCAC Blue Division leader Austin College for much of the game, but a strong second-quarter from the visiting Roos boosted them to a 72-57 victory over the YellowJackets in SCAC action on Saturday inside Solheim Arena.
LeTourneau (5-13, 2-7 SCAC) either tied or outscored Austin College (11-8, 8-2 SCAC) in three quarters, but the Roos used a 32-10 burst in the second quarter to build a double-digit lead.
Mariana Espinosa led the YellowJackets with 13 points to go with seven assists and seven rebounds.
Kaylin Cervantes had a season-high 12 points and eight rebounds, while
Kylie Weeks added 11 points and four steals.
Austin College sprinted out to a six-point lead in the first five minutes of the first quarter. LeTourneau used a 6-0 run over the final 30 seconds of the period to tie the score at 20-20.
Makenzie Covey drained a jumper to start the rally before a flagrant foul on Austin College enabled Weeks to make two free throws and Cervantes got a bucket in the waning seconds to even the score.
In the second, Austin College shot 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from the field and hit four 3-pointers to go on a 32-10 run and grab a 52-30 lead at the half.
LeTourneau trimmed the margin to 11 (62-51) on a 3-pointer from
Sallie Moser with 7:26 left in the fourth quarter, but that was as close as the YellowJackets got the rest of the game. The YellowJackets outscored Austin College 27-20 over the final two quarters.
Covey scored 10 points with six rebounds, while Moser had six points and four rebounds for LeTourneau.
Austin College received 19 points and seven rebounds from Brooklyn Matthews, while Lexi Martin had 18 points. The Roos shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field with eight 3-pointers.
