Women's Hoops Drops Conference Road Game

KERRVILLE, Texas -- A tough shooting night was too much to overcome for the LeTourneau women's basketball team in a 70-57 loss at Schreiner in SCAC play on Friday night.

The loss snaps a two-game win streak for LeTourneau (4-8, 1-2 SCAC).

LeTourneau went cold from the field throughout the game, connecting on 30.4 percent (17-of-56) overall. The YellowJackets reduced a 21-point deficit to just 10 late in the fourth quarter, thanks in part to a 21-of-32 effort at the free throw line.

Kylie Weeks went 13-of-17 at the line for 17 points to go with six steals, two assists, and two blocks. Kaylin Cervantes added 11 points and four rebounds off the bench while Sallie Moser hit both of LeTourneau's 3-pointers on the night and finished with eight points. Mariana Espinosa contributed six points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

Both teams got off to cold shooting starts. Schreiner (2-10, 1-2 SCAC) held a 9-7 lead at the end of the first period.

In the second, LeTourneau shot 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from the field but Schreiner was 11-of-17 and extended a slim lead to nine (34-25) at the break.

That margin pushed further for the host Mountaineers in the third quarter. Schreiner outscored LeTourneau 20-8 in the period with the lead ballooning to 21 (54-33) after a late basket to end the quarter.

Down by 21 in the fourth, LeTourneau persisted and got back into the game. An old-fashioned three-point play from Weeks with 4:01 left trimmed the deficit to 10 (59-49) and capped a 15-4 run for the YellowJackets over a five-minute stretch.

The comeback attempt ended there, however, as a 3-pointer from Schreiner's Brie Sosa at the 2:18 mark extended the hosts' lead back to 14 (65-51). That triple was the only 3-pointer made by Schreiner on the night.

LeTourneau forced Schreiner into 21 turnovers and converted those into 22 points and limited the Mountaineers to only 1-of-18 from beyond the 3-point line.

Schreiner got a game-high 21 points from Sosa and 10 points from Lynnashia Brooks in the win. The Mountaineers finished shooting 40.9 percent (27-of-66) from the field.
