Defensive-Minded Men's Soccer Secures Draw at TLU

SEGUIN, Texas -- On a soggy field, defense was the name of the game on Friday evening and the LeTourneau men's soccer team secured a point in the SCAC opener with a 0-0 draw at Texas Lutheran at Gustafson Field.

LeTourneau (4-4-1, 0-0-1 SCAC) took a draw for the first time since Oct. 3, 2025 and it was the first time the YellowJackets earned a point against Texas Lutheran since 2016 (four matches).

Rainy weather on Friday and the last few days contributed to soggy field conditions that put an emphasis on defense for both teams. LeTourneau outshot the defending SCAC champion Bulldogs, 14-6, in the match and created opportunities to score in both halves.

Colton Chalker and Julian Ibarra each had looks in the first 15 minutes of the match, with Ibarra's attempt in the seventh minute saved by Texas Lutheran keeper Ernesto Avila. The YellowJackets kept the pressure up throughout the half, but Avila made two saves to keep the match scoreless.

In the second 45-minute stanza, LeTourneau was the aggressor again for the first 20 minutes. Ibarra and Sammy Shmorgun each had attempts on frame that were handled by Avila.

LeTourneau had to withstand a flurry of chances from the Texas Lutheran side over the final 20 minutes of play.

It appeared the host Bulldogs had taken a 1-0 lead in the 89th minute. A loose ball in the box was played towards the goal line and into the net, however, Texas Lutheran's Luis Briseno was called for a foul as he bumped LeTourneau goalkeeper Edson Camara Martinez as Martinez was diving back in a save attempt. The call negated the goal and the YellowJackets held on in the final minute for the draw.

Camara Martinez made two saves in the final two minutes, including a last-second attempt on a free kick from Texas Lutheran keeper Avila. Camara Martinez ended the night with four saves as he earned his first shutout of the season.

Avila made five saves at the net for Texas Lutheran (2-6-1, 0-0-1 SCAC).

Chalker led all players with five shots, while Ibarra had three (including two on goal).
