LONGVIEW, Texas --
Jackson Mayes scored a career-high 40 points and
Teigan Edwards totaled a career-best 30 points, but the LeTourneau men's basketball team could not complete a second-half comeback in a 105-102 loss to Concordia Texas on Tuesday night in SCAC play.
Mayes shot 13-of-24 from the field with five 3-pointers and was 9-of-10 from the free throw line for his 40-point performance. It was the first 40-point game for a YellowJacket since
Deonte Jackson had 40 vs. Mary Hardin-Baylor on Feb. 13, 2025. Mayes also grabbed seven rebounds and had two assists.
Edwards notched his career-high 30 points going 10-of-16 from the floor with five 3-pointers and tallied nine rebounds with five assists.
LeTourneau (13-6, 8-2 SCAC) saw its season-long six-game winning streak halted in the loss.
In a game featuring two of the top three teams in the SCAC, the environment had a postseason vibe. Concordia (16-3, 9-1 SCAC), the third-highest scoring team in the nation, raced out to a 16-point lead in the first half. LeTourneau never backed down and rallied to take two leads late in the second half before the visiting Tornados held on for the win.
The Tornados made 66.7 percent (20-of-30) in the first half and took a 56-43Â lead into halftime.
In the second half, LeTourneau chipped away at the margin -- getting to within one possession at the 10-minute mark. The YellowJackets took their first lead of the night (90-89) on a layup from Mayes with 4:53 remaining. After Concordia regained the lead on the next possession, Mayes came back down and drilled a 3-pointer to give the YellowJackets a 93-91 edge with 3:44 left.
Tied at 95 with under two minutes left, Concordia's Aaron San Miguel drained a 3-pointer to give Concordia the lead for good at 98-95. That trey started a 7-0 run that put the Tornados ahead 102-95 with under 30 seconds remaining.
LeTourneau made three quick baskets, capped by an Edwards 3-pointer with five seconds left to get within 104-102. Concordia's Cameron Thompson made 1-of-2 at the line with 1.7 seconds left and a three-quarter court heave at the buzzer came up short for LeTourneau.
Logan Brinkoeter added 14 points, five rebounds, and four assists for LeTourneau while
David Martinez had nine points and a game-high seven assists. The YellowJackets connected on 52.2 percent (36-of-69) from the floor with 12 3-pointers.Â
Joey Ramirez, the SCAC's leading scorer, led the way for the Tornados with 32 points on 13-of-17 from the floor. Percy Green scored 26 points with eight rebounds off the bench and San Miguel added 21 points and six assists. The Tornados finished the night shooting 55.6 percent (35-of-63) with 10 3-pointers and a 25-of-29 effort at the foul line.
