JACKSON, Miss. -- Leandro Ferreira's late goal lifted the LeTourneau men's soccer team over Belhaven 2-1.
The YellowJackets won a back-and-forth match after a late start due to a lightning delay Thursday night at Belhaven Bowl Stadium.Â
Belhaven (0-3-1) had a hot start to the match and had several strong chances in the first 15 minutes, but LeTourneau senior goalkeeper Edson Camara Martinez made three saves on the first three shots he faced.Â
The tide turned quickly in the 36th minute when Ferreira fed a ball over a defender to Bridge Mwambukiri, who blasted a right-footed shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The goal was the first of the season for Mwambukiri, who tallied three total in 2025. Ferreira's assist was his second of the season.Â
LeTourneau (3-0) kept up the offensive pressure, but momentum was slowed by a lighting outage that lasted for several minutes in the second half. Immediately after, Belhaven scored a goal on a set-piece play in the 70th minute. A free-kick from Diego Sarzalejo was headed by Ivan Quinones into the box for Zachary Howard, who finished with his right foot and evened the score at 1-1.Â
The YellowJackets responded with strong offensive pressure, finishing the match with 10 shots, five on goal.Â
In the 74th minute, after a quick passing sequence, Jeffrey Boedeker crossed a ball from the right side. Chalker settled the ball and earned his second assist of the night with a no-look drop-off pass to Ferreira, who used a right-footed shot to score his first goal of the season and give LeTourneau the 2-1 lead and eventual win. Boedeker and Chalker were credited with assists on the goal.
Chalker's assist was the first of his career.
With Thursday night's win, LeTourneau starts the season 3-0 for the first time since 2010. The YellowJackets also picked up their first win over Belhaven since 2021.
Camara Martinez gathered five saves on the night. Belhaven keeper Justin Ramirez played all 90 minutes and saved three shots.
