YellowJackets Drop Heartbreaker to Schreiner

Box Score

LONGVIEW - The LeTourneau YellowJacket Women's Soccer Team were back in action on a cold, windy Friday afternoon as they took on Schreiner Mountaineers in ASC play. Despite outshooting Schreiner 26-9, a hat trick from Bria Howard proved to be the difference as the Jackets dropped a heartbreaker, 3-2.

LeTourneau (1-16, 1-10 ASC) came out aggressive and netted the first goal of the match in the second minute as junior Jamie Malinaric found junior Liz Bowman who put a brilliant finish towards the top corner of the net.

The YellowJackets completely dominated from there, outshooting Shreiner 13-1 as they were dominant on the attack, holding possession and getting many great looks at goal. However, the Jackets could not find a second goal to extend their lead.

The Mountaineers (3-11-1, 3-8 ASC) did find a goal in the 43rd minute. Only taking their second shot of the game, Howard got her team on the board as she snuck by the LeTourneau defense to even the score going into break.

The YellowJackets took the first 11 shots of the second half as they ripped through Schreiner's defense, but came away empty handed on all of their opportunities.

In the 67th minute, Howard struck again as she followed up a rebound to put the Mountaineers ahead despite their lack of offense. Freshman goalkeeper Nicole Kemper had to come off the field due to an injury on that play and with Jamie Aguillen hurt, freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Conway moved to keeper for the remainder of the match.

LeTourneau responded in the 80th minute when Bowman sent a gorgeous through ball to junior Katie Plunk who who finish the attack off with a goal in the corner of the net to tie the game at two.

It looked as if overtime was in the making until the speedster Howard found a breakaway towards goal and, despite a great effort from Conway, was able to finish for her third goal of the match in the 85th minute. It was all the Mountaineers needed to seal the deal and give LeTourneau a gut wrenching defeat.

Plunk and Bowman led the offensive attack with nine shots while Malinaric and senior Chelsey Pizano added three shots each. The Jackets got a great defensive effort from sophomore Katy Wallace and senior Elisa Athans. Kemper picked up three saves while Conway had one.

LeTourneau is back in action tomorrow as they will celebrate three seniors in Liz Bowman, Natalie Hajek, and Elise Athans in their final home game. The festivities will take place at halftime and kickoff for the match against Texas Lutheran will take place at 4 p.m.
