YellowJackets Pick Up Draw in Season Finale

Box Score

LONGVIEW - The LeTourneau YellowJacket women's soccer team competed in their final match of the season at home against Texas Lutheran for Senior Day. In what turned out to be a thriller, the Jackets played to a draw as they honored three seniors on the afternoon.

The first half saw a lot of action as each time got opportunities to jump out on top. Texas Lutheran (7-9-1, 4-7-1 ASC) was on the attack early, taking the first two shots, but the YellowJackets (1-16-1, 1-10-1 ASC) countered with two shots of their own.

The goalkeeping was excellent early on, especially in the home goal where freshman Nicole Kemper had three saves in the first half including a couple where it seemed sure the Bulldogs were going to take the early lead.

It seemed as though the two teams were going to go into half scoreless until a foul was committed by the Bulldogs right outside the box with seven seconds remaining before half. Senior Liz Bowman lined it up and fired a gorgeous shot over the keeper's outstretched arms to score her fourth goal of the season and give LeTourneau a 1-0 and all the momentum at the break.

At half, LeTourneau recognized three seniors in Bowman, Natalie Hijak, and Elise Athans as they were given a great ovation.

Throughout the second half, Texas Lutheran was looking for the equalizer, while the YellowJackets continued to hold on tightly to their 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs were caught offsides three times in the first 20 minutes of the second half.

LeTourneau was also turning in good shots as they looked to extend their lead, but goalkeeper Devin Crump of the Bulldogs continued to make great saves.

At the 84th minute, freshman Meagan Whisenhunt came free and had a one on one opportunity with the keeper. As Whisenhunt struck an excellent ball, Crump made an unbelievable save to keep the game at 1-0.

The YellowJackets were holding on, but with 42 seconds remaining, Courtney Brooks' cross found the foot of Sunny Valencia-Brown and tied the match at one to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, LeTourneau outshot Texas Lutheran 4-3, but neither team could find the golden goal and the game ended in a draw.

Kemper was excellent in goal with eight saves including many key ones to keep LeTourneau ahead throughout the match. The Jackets also got great defensive efforts from Athans, Hajek, sophomore Katy Wallace, freshman Kaitlyn Conway, and junior Grace Peterson.

Bowman had six shots on the day including the huge goal while Whisenhunt and Chelsey Pizano added three shots a piece.

The Jackets season comes to a close as they say goodbye to their three seniors. They now begin their offseason and will be ready for action in 2013.
