Jackets Roll Past 'Roos to Complete Perfect Week

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LONGVIEW - The LeTourneau YellowJacket softball team could not have asked for a better start to the 2013 campaign. In four game, the Jackets have put 22 runs on the scoreboard and have not allowed a single run. They were dominant again on Friday as they swept Austin College, 8-0 (5) and 5-0 to improve to 4-0 on the new year.

The 'Roos were determined to get on the board first, getting a pair of two out hits to get a runner into scoring position. However, freshman starter Karen Kubacek settled in and got a groundout to third baseman Anna Winter to end the inning.

After two quick outs in the bottom of the first, junior Jordan Glover got things rolling with a base hit followed by a hit by pitch. Junior Sara Whitehead ripped a single up the middle for the early 1-0 advantage.

After a hit batter, Kubacek settled into her zone and sat down the next six batters. Whitehead struck again in the third with another RBI single to increase the lead to 2-0.

Kubacak continued to mow down hitters and the Jackets broke things open in the fifth. Winter singled up the middle followed by an error by the 'Roos and another single from sophomore Brooklyn Greene to load the bases. The Jackets then got three runs off of walks and hit batsmen to increase their lead to 5-0.

Glover finished the game off as she belted a long ball off the left center fence to clear the bases and take the 8-0 elimination win.

Kubacak picked up her second win of the season with another complete game shutout, giving up only four hits and striking out two.

Glover led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored while Whitehead added a 2-for-3 game with two RBIs. Senior Juliana Tuel was 2-for-3 with one RBI, one run scored, and her fifth stolen base on the young season. Freshmen Taylor Kaderli and Shelby Borders also added RBIs.

In game two, junior Kaylee Pritchett came out and sat Austin College down in order with some nasty offspeed pitches.

The Jackets got things rolling in the first as Tuel led things off with a single followed by Borders being hit by a pitch and another single by Glover. Winter cleared the bases with a single to right with an error by the right fielder for a 3-0 lead. Green followed that up with a sacrifice fly to center to increase the  lead.

Pritchett was solid, carrying a no hitter into the fifth inning and consistently fooled Austin College throughout the evening.

The Jackets were back in business in the fourth as junior Chloe Cooper reached and advanced to second on an error followed by a second error on a pickoff attempt by the catcher to move her to third. Kaderli placed a perfect suicide squeeze bunt and made it safely to first for a RBI.

From there, Pritchett led the way and junior Taylor Thibodeaux finished the 'Roos off in the seventh to pick up the 5-0 win.

Pritchett got her first win of her career in the royal and gold, going six strong innings and only allowing two hits and striking out five. Thibodeaux added one inning of perfect ball to go with two strikeouts as she move closer to becoming the all-time strikeout leader in LETU history.

Winter was 2-for-3 on the day with two RBIs and a run scored while Tuel was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Greene and Kaderli each added RBIs and freshman Halee Pryor and Brittinie Alcorn each added their first hits of the season.

For the Jackets, it is the first time in school history that they have started the season with four shutouts.

LeTourneau will be back in action next Friday as they head to Pineville, La. for the Louisiana College Round Robin Tournament. They will start the day off against Mary Hardin-Baylor in non-conference action at 1 p.m. followed by an evening game against Millsaps College at 5 p.m.
