Softball Splits a Pair on Day One of Round Robin Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SHREVEPORT, La. - The LeTourneau YellowJacket softball team traveled down the road and across the state border into Louisiana to compete in the Louisiana College Round Robin Tournament, which was moved to Shreveport due to weather. The Jackets started the day falling just short of a comeback to Mary Hardin-Baylor before responding in the nightcap and defeating Millsaps.

In Game One against the Cru, UMHB was able to get one in the third, three in the fifth, and one in the seventh to take a 5-0 advantage.

However, the Jackets were not going down quietly as their final three outs approached. After a groundout and a batter reaching on an error, freshman Halee Pryor belted a double to score a run and get LeTourneau on the board. Freshman Megan Hill then came to the plate and knocked a double of her own to make it a 5-2 ballgame.

After a single by sophomore Brooklyn Greene, senior Juliana Tuel doubled to left to score another run. After the second out was recorded, junior Jourdan Glover singled to center to score another run and make it a 5-4 game. However, the Jacket could not complete the comeback as the final out was recorded.

Freshman Karen Kubacak took her first loss of the season despite only giving up one run. Juniors Taylor Thibodeaux, Kaylee Pritchett, and Kelli Parton all saw action in the circle.

Offensively, five of the Jackets seven hits came in the seventh inning while no one had more than one hit or one RBI. Hill was perfect from the plate in a pinch hitting situation, going 1-for-1.

In the nightcap, the Jackets took on Millsaps as they looked to get back on the winning end. Tuel led the game off with single and then was moved to second off a sacrifice bunt by freshman Taylor Kaderli. After a hit by pitch, junior Anna Winter singled up the middle to load the bases with one out. Following a strikeout, junior Sara Whithead drew a walk for the early 1-0 lead.

Kubacak got the start again and mowed the Majors down, limiting their hits and keeping them off the scoreboard.

Glover led the bottom of the third off with a single and one batter later, freshman Shelby Borders drove her in with a double to left center for a 2-0 lead. After a groundout moved Borders to third, she would cross home plate off a wild pitch and increase the lead to 3-0.

As LeTourneau turned to their bullpen by bringing in Parton, they broke the game wide open in the fifth. Glover led the inning off with a walk followed by the second RBI double of the evening by Borders. Whitehead came to the plate and singled to center to score another run and make it a 5-0 game.

After a hit by pitch and a single, Tuel walked and Kaderli laced an RBI single to left to increase their lead to 7-0.

From there, a combination of Parton and Pritchett combined to shut Millsaps down and take the victory, LeTourneau's fifth shutout of the season.

Kubacak got the win to go to 3-1 on the season, pitching four innings and allowing no runs. Parton added two innings and three strikouts while Pritchett pitched one innings. The Jackets shutout a Major team that scored 10 runs earlier that afternoon against Centenary.

Offensively, Hill completed a perfect day from the plate, going 3-for-3 while borders was 2-for-4 with pairs of doubles, RBIs, and runs scored. Whitehead was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Kaderli added a 2-for-3 day with a RBI. LeTourneau banged out 12 hits on the evening.

The Jackets return to action tomorrow as they wrap up the Round Robin Tournament, starting things at 11 a.m. against Centenary College before returning at 1 as they get to see UMHB for a second time. Check letuathletics.com for postgame information on these games.
