Box Score 2 LONGVIEW - The LeTourneau YellowJacket softball team was back in action on Thursday night as they welcomed in the Texas-Dallas Comets in ASC action. Despite great offense from the Jackets, a nine run fifth inning gave UT-Dallas an 11-8 win in the first game before the Jackets returned the favor with an eight run second inning for a 12-7 win in the nightcap.
In the first game, freshman Shelby Border opened things up in the bottom of the first with a RBI double to right center to score senior Juliana Tuel for a 1-0 lead. UT-Dallas (16-12-1, 7-9 ASC) evened things up in the second before the Jackets (20-14, 7-11 ASC) responded with a huge third inning.
Freshman Megan Hill led things off with a single followed by a single by Tuel. Both runners advanced a base due to an error on the catcher and freshman Taylor Kaderli put down a perfect bunt to score Hill for a 2-1 lead. Borders followed that with a single and junior Jourdan Glover was hit by a pitch. Junior Anna Winter singled to score a run and sophomore Brooklyn Greene drove in two more for a 6-1 advantage.
However, a monster nine run inning brought the Comets all the way back for a 10-6 lead. They added one more in the sixth for an 11-6 advantage.
The Jackets got two runs home in the seventh off an RBI double from Glover, but it was not enough as the Comets took the 11-8 victory.
Junior Kelli Parton pitched the first four innings and was terrific, giving up only one run. However, after struggles from the relievers, Parton came back in behind 7-6 and pitched the remaining 2.2 innings and struck out five in the contest.
Offensively, Tuel came away with three hits in four at bats and scored three runs while Borders added a 2-for-4 day with two RBIs. Glover and Greene drove in a pair each while Kaderli and Winter also added a RBI.
In the second game, Tuel started things off with a single and was moved to second and third by the next two batters. Tuel then scored on a wild pitch for the early 1-0 lead.
UT-Dallas again added one back in the top of the second, but the Jackets looked to make a statement and did just that in the second inning.
Winter led things off with a single followed by a single by Greene and a walk to freshman Halee Pryor. Sophomore Brittinie Alcorn came up and laced a single by the diving second baseman to score two and take a 3-1 lead. After a ground out by Hill to move both runners over, Tuel put a ball in play that was overthrown into right field to score both runs and Tuel motored all the way around the bases to score and take a 6-1 lead.
The Jackets weren't done there, after a walk to Kaderli, Glover came to the plate and smashed a double off the center field wall. After a hit by pitch, Greene put a ball in play that went off the first basemen's foot to score two more and take a 9-1 advantage.
UT-Dallas got a few back to try and keep in reach, but RBI singles from Winter and Pryor in the fourth and another RBI from Glover ensured that no comeback was going to happen this time, taking the 12-7 victory.
Pritchett improved to 2-1 on the season, getting the complete game and striking out five batters.
Offensively, Glover was terrific, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Winter was 2-for-3 with a RBI and three runs scored. Tuel added two hits and two runs scored to go with a RBI while Alcorn drove in two.
LeTourneau will close their home season on Monday as they welcome in the nationally ranked, Texas-Tyler Patriots for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. and the game can be seen live on letuathletics.tv.
