Box Score The LeTourneau University softball team swept a doubleheader – 4-0 and 4-1 - from Howard Payne University on Saturday in Brownwood.
LeTourneau (5-1, 2-1 ASC) had eight hits in and solid pitching in the twinbill sweep. Senior
Anna Winter had two hits in each win to lead the attack.
Howard Payne (2-4, 1-2 ASC) was held to just eight hits for the two games.
Game 1
LeTourneau started the day with a 4-0 shutout on the strength of senior pitcher
Taylor Thibodeaux – who held them to one hit on Friday – allowed just three hits in the contest. LETU gave her two runs of support each in the third and sixth inning for the win.
In the third inning, LETU scored both of its runs without a hit. Then, in the sixth inning, LeTourneau plated two insurance when sophomore
Halee Pryor started the inning with a single. A bunt single by freshman
Courtney Matulis put runners on first and second for freshman
Ashley Hickerson. Next, LETU capitalized on a Howard Payne miscue on a Hickerson bunt to stretch the lead to 3-0. Later in the inning, they plated their fourth run of the game on a RBI groundout by freshman Ashley Judd.
Game 2
LeTourneau plated four runs – all of which came with two outs - in the first inning en route to the 4-1 win over HPU. After a one-out single by sophomore
Taylor Kaderli, she came in to score on a RBI double by Winter for the first run. Then, they plated their second run of the evening when freshman
Courtney Matulis singled up the middle. An error by HPU and a RBI single by Pryor stretched the lead to 4-0.
LETU held a 4-0 lead until Howard Payne plated its first run in 12 innings when they scored in the sixth. LeTourneau starting pitcher
Kelli Parton allowed five hits, struck out five and gave up a run – earned for her second win of the season. Along with Winter having two hits, Matulis also had two hits for her third multi-hit game of the season.
Next, LeTourneau returns home for its home opener on Friday, Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. when they host the University of Ozarks in a doubleheader.
