Stephanie Vana scored a hat trick to lead the LeTourneau University women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Centenary College in its season opener at the LETU Soccer Complex on Friday.
Â
Vana became the first player since Kirby Posey on October 4, 2008 to score three goals in a game for the YellowJackets. The La Verne, California native scored each of her goals from different parts of the field to cause havoc for a collapsing Centenary defense. Vana had two goals in last year's meeting against Centenary.
Â
The 3-0 shutout win by LeTourneau is its first since they opened the 2011 campaign with a 1-0 shutout of Hendrix to begin the season. LETU junior goalkeeper
Jamie Aguillen made five saves in the win for her first career shutout.
"We gave an excellent team effort and we have a special group of student athletes, who play the game the right away" said head coach
John Antonisse, who picked up his first win as the YellowJackets head coach. "The win was entirely a team win."
The YellowJackets dominated the offensive ledger with a 26-8 advantage in shots including a game-high 11 from Vana. Plus, they had 14 corner kicks compared to just two for Centenary.
LeTourneau will resume its four-match homestand to begin the season when they host Austin College on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 5 p.m.
