A bases loaded walk to junior
Quinn Brankin allowed the LeTourneau University baseball team to prevail with a 4-3 extra-inning win over the University of the Ozarks on Friday night at Conrad-Vernon Field.
The YellowJackets (15-15, 13-10 ASC) started the 10
th inning with back-to-back singles by
Taylor Empkey and
Sean Sellers. Then, the duo moved up a base on a wild pitch and
Ryan Bertram picked up an intentional walk to load the bases for
Dillon Yates. The junior catcher lined out to second base to halt the threat.
With the game tied at 3, then Brankin – who entered the game as a late-inning substitution – picked up his second walk-off RBI of the season on a walk to score Empkey and the game-winning run.
The Eagles (10-27, 5-21 ASC) held a 3-1 lead on LETU starter
Justin Jenkins until the YellowJackets tied it in the fifth on a two-run home run by Empkey. Ozarks catcher Sam Shook and designated hitter Patrick Clifford each had two hits to pace an eight-hit attack. Starting pitcher John Singler was handed the loss, scattering nine hits over 9.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) and struck out four in the loss.
Each team scored in the second inning to make it a 1-1 game. Then, a RBI double by Finley and a RBI single by Clifford for Ozarks in the third and fourth, respectively against Jenkins put the Eagles ahead 3-1. Jenkins, who was not involved in the decision, went nine innings in a no decision. The Hallsville native faced 38 batters, struck out 13 and allowed eight hits.
Canaan Klaassen pitched the 10
th and struck out one to even his record at 1-1.
Facing a 3-1 deficit in the fifth inning,
Caleb Pritchett singled up the middle. Then, Empkey took the next offering from Singler over the left-field fence for his second home run of the season to tie the game at 3.
The YellowJackets will close out the home portion of its schedule on Saturday in a twinbill at 1 p.m. Between games of the doubleheader, LETU will recognize its seniors –
Josh Bailey,
Ryan Bertram,
Jon Lewis,
Landon Methvin,
David Perkins,
