LETU Baseball Loses Series Opener to McMurry, 16-2

McMurry University came back from an early 1-0 deficit to defeat the LeTourneau University baseball team, 16-2 in the series opener on Saturday in Abilene.

The YellowJackets (5-7) quickly took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI single by Taylor Empkey, scoring Sean Sellers (pictured). To start the game, Sellers picked up the first of three hits on the evening. The senior quickly advanced around the bases, stealing second and third, respectively.

The War Hawks (5-8) erased the 1-0 deficit with a two-run third inning. Then, the bats for McMurry broke the game wide open with a six-run fourth, a five-run sixth and a three-run third before LeTourneau would get back on the scoreboard. 10-different players contributed to a 14-hit attack, including Noah Clarkson who had a team-high three. Clarkson also had a team-best three RBI and scored twice.

LeTourneau starter Jordan Carns pitched three innings, allowing nine hits, eight runs (six earned) and struck out two to fall to 2-3. The YellowJackets used five pitchers in the contest. McMurry starter John Eric Cortez pitched six innings, scattering four hits and striking out five to improve to 1-3.

Offensively for LeTourneau, Sellers had three hits for his sixth multi-hit game and extended his hitting streak to eight games in the loss. Junior Kyle Jacobs picked up a RBI on a bases loaded walk for the other run for the YellowJackets in the eighth inning.

The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
