Box Score 2 HOOVER, Ala. – The LeTourneau softball team swept a pair of games to round out the BSC Classic in Alabama, winning the first game against Huntingdon, 4-2, and taking down No. 13 Mount St. Joseph, 5-3, to close out the day.
The YellowJackets notched its two wins of the season, after taking down a Huntingdon squad that just upset the No. 1 team in the country, DePauw, a day ago. LETU went 2-2 at the BSC Classic.
LETU blanked the Hawks to start the contest in the opening inning and rattled off two runs to in the bottom half to take a quick 2-0 lead.
Callie Poore was the culprit for the two runs, demolishing a ball over the center field gate for a two run homer.
The Hawks would not go away, despite five scoreless innings, Huntingdon capitalized on a hit by pitch and walk to tally two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game. LETU matched the two scores at the bottom of the inning to quickly take the lead, 4-2.
Macy Clevenger centered to center field, sending
Bailey Richey home for an RBI, while
Hunter Handley had a sacrificed bunt, allowing
Kenna Hendry in for a score.
The YellowJackets put Huntingdon away after a quick three outs for the first three batters stifled a comeback.
Poore had two RBIs in the game, going 1-2 from the plate. Clevenger and Alexas Neilon each went 2-3 batting, while Hendry went 1-1. Handley and Clevenger each added an RBI in the contest.
Laney Taylor carried the load on the mound for the Jackets, pitching five innings with only four hits allowed. Richey got the win for LETU, collecting three strikeouts in the game.
In the second game, No. 13 Mount St. Joseph got out the gates quickly, taking a 3-0 advantage over LeTourneau moving into the bottom half of the second inning.
LETU got the ball rolling in the second inning after Clevenger singled to right field to send home
Kylie Grisham for the Jackets first score. Handley followed up with an RBI of her own, batting one to right field for
Mickenzie Murry to dash home, cutting the MSJ lead to one at the top of the third.
After a scoreless three innings for both squads, the YellowJackets stung the Lions in the bottom of the sixth for three runs.
Jade Merrell tripled to left field to start it off, moving
Graci Hart across home plate to tally a score. Hendry tallied an RBI on a sacrifice to send Merrell in for a score, while Clevenger cleaned singled to left field to send Hendry in, LETU led 5-3 heading into the decisive inning.
The Lions grounded out on the first batter in the seventh inning, but MSJ's Kelsi Stevenson doubled to right field to attempt a comeback. Back-to-back outs by Mount St. Joseph put an immediate halt on the comeback efforts for the Lions.
Madelyn Tannery went the distance for the Jackets to capture the win, allowing six hits on 21 batters faced with four strikeouts. Handley and Clevenger each tallied an RBI in the game, while going 1-2 at the plate. Murry and Grisham each had a stolen base.
The YellowJackets open up at home Feb. 25 as it hosts Sul Ross State for an American Southwest Conference matchup and three game series.
