ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The most decorated athlete in LeTourneau track and field history wrapped up his career on Friday as
Jack Miller competed in the pole vault at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in Rochester, N.Y.
Making his third career appearance in the outdoor championships, Miller came in 20th as he cleared a height of 4.60 meters (15' 1"). It was his seventh overall appearance at the NCAA Championships between indoor and outdoor seasons, including his second this year after qualifying for the indoor championships in March.
"Today wasn't Jack's day, but it wasn't most of the field's day either looking at the results," said head coach
Kathleen Raske. "Jack ends his career having competed in seven NCAA meets, and earned All-America three times, which is an incredible feat."
Miller got through the first height of 4.60 meters on his third attempt. At the 4.75-meter height, Miller was unable to clear the bar in his attempts.Â
The rest of the field also struggled with the early morning start time. Only four of the 22 competitors made it beyond the third series of heights set at 4.90 meters. Ithaca's Dominic Mikula won the title as he finished with a mark of 5.05 meters.
Miller worked his way back from an injury in early spring to have another shot in the NCAA Championships. The senior from Diana, Texas, did not compete in an outdoor event until late April and qualified for the Championships after producing a mark of 4.94 meters (16' 2.5") at the ASC Championships. That height put him 14th in the nation and back into the national meet.
"He struggled with an injury this year and did not vault much, so getting to this meet and being top-20 speaks to his experience, athletic maturity, and competitive nature," added Raske. "We are so proud of Jack and appreciate that he was an anchor for our program and represented LeTourneau with excellence."
Miller ends his career as a seven-time NCAA Championships qualifier (four indoor, three outdoor) and a three-time All-American. He holds both indoor and outdoor program records in the pole vault and was a two-time ASC champion in the event. Miller collected USTFCCCA Outdoor All-West Region honors last week and earned all-region eight times in his career.
"He is the most decorated NCAA athlete at LeTourneau," added Raske. "He stayed local, got a great degree in civil engineering, got through the COVID years and a coaching change. He will be missed!"
It was the seventh time in program history the YellowJackets had an outdoor national qualifier.
