WESTWORTH VILLAGE, Texas -- The LeTourneau women's golf team set a conference record and hold the lead after day one of the SCAC Tournament, hosted at the par-72 Hawks Creek Golf Club.
LeTourneau shot a 23-over, 311 in the opening round which set a conference record for low first round score. The YellowJackets sit in first place by 14 strokes over St. Thomas (325, +37).
Elena Jurado got off to a strong start and finished with a career-best round of 5-over, 77 to end the first round in a tie for second overall. Jurado birdied two of her first three holes of the day and was 1-under at the turn before posting a 77.
Kinley Pessel also shot a 5-over, 77 to sit in a tie for second. The junior got off to a slow start, but then went even-par on the final nine holes, which included two birdies.Â
Jurado and Pessel are chasing St. Thomas' Leah Torres, who opened the tournament with a 3-over, 75.
Emerson Swanner and
Calli Hoesterey are both inside the top-10 after round one. Swanner shot a 6-over, 78 with one birdie and is tied for sixth. Hoesterey tallied a 7-over, 79 with three birdies to be in 10th overall.
Hannah Newell carded a 9-over, 81 with a pair of birdies and is just outside the top-10 at 11th.
LeTourneau had twice as many birdies (10) as any other team in the field and led in par-4 scoring average as a team (4.32).Â
