Box Score AUSTIN - The LeTourneau YellowJacket men's basketball opened up ASC play on Thursday evening as they took on the Concordia Tornadoes. Turnovers proved to be costly for the Jackets as they committed 28 turnovers to only 14 by Concordia as they fell 95-78.
LeTourneau (1-3, 0-1 ASC) battled well in the first half as they kept within striking distance of the Tornadoes. However, the Jackets got bad news as freshman point guard Chris Hynes hobbled off the court at the 16:05 mark with some sort of leg injury. He did not return in the game.
The news didn't get much better later in the game as junior Justin Jones, their leading scorer so far this season, picked up his second foul before the 10 minute mark and went to the bench.
The Jackets did fall behind by as many as 12, but sophomore Josh Thornton wheeled the Jackets back on track as he put up 15 first half points and LeTourneau cut the deficit to five as the teams went into the break.
LeTourneau got the game back down to five in the second half after senior Cristian Driver drained a three pointer, but Concordia (1-1, 1-0 ASC) turned up the pressure and began to force turnovers and pull away, not letting LeTourneau get any closer.
The Jackets continued to battle and tried to get back in the game, but it was not enough as the Tornadoes picked up their first conference win of the season.
Freshman Ladaria Brown led the way with 20 points and two steals while Thornton added 19 points and four assists. The team shot 52% (30-of-58) from the field and 46% (6-of-13) from three point land. However, a glaring struggle was at the free throw line, where they 43%, shooting only 12-of-28.
The Jackets will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Belton, Texas to take on Mary Hardin-Baylor. The game has been changed to 7:30 due to playoff football game set to take place earlier that day.
