TYLER, Texas – Four LeTourneau men's tennis student athletes and two doubles duos picked up wins this weekend at the 2012 ITA/USTA Southwest Regional Championship. Due to rain, some matches were not able to be played.
Carlos Cantu defeated Texas-Tyler's Matt Moreman in the first round of the A Draw Singles championship, 6-1, 6-2. Cantu was later defeated by Charlie Curtis of Trinity University, 6-3, 6-1.
In B Draw Singles, Jared Jernigan defeated Dylan Price of Hardin-Simmons, 6-0, 6-4, in the first round. Jernigan advanced to the Round of 16 when he earned a victory over Gregg Knaggs of Ozarks, who had to withdraw due to injury.
Morgan Weaver took down Bryant Ford of Ozarks in the first round of B Draw Singles, 6-1, 6-0, before being defeated by John Ward of Texas-Tyler (6-3, 6-2).
Michael McLaughlin won his first round match against Jimmy Turner of Mary Hardin-Baylor (3-6, 6-4, 10-7) before falling to Howard Payne's Will Thomas (6-1, 3-6, 10-8) in the round of 32.
In B Draw Doubles, Jernigan and McLaughlin won their first round matchup against Thomas Borum and Greg Nelson of Texas Lutheran, 8-5. The LETU duo was then defeated in the round of 32, 8-5, by Ryan Brunson and Ethan LaPlante of Texas-Tyler.
Weaver and John Smith took down Cameron Camp and Brice Conoly of Schreiner in the round of 64, 8-5, and advanced to the round of 16 with an 8-5 win over Bill Blake and Alix Tiegs of Ozarks.
LeTourneau men's tennis will return to the courts Oct. 5 at the Doc Skogman Invitational in Seguin, Texas.
