BROWNSWOOD - The LeTourneau YellowJacket women's tennis team opened up the 2013 season on Friday afternoon as they took on the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets. LeTourneau fought hard, but fell to the Yellow Jackets 7-2 on the road.
It all started in doubles competition where juniors Sarah Case and Shelby May led No. 1 doubles to an 8-2 win over Joan Burks and Samantha Guerrero. The No. 2 team of freshmen Nell Spencer and Brittany Cowan put up a great fight against the team of Whitney Turnacliff and Larissa Lynskey, but fell short 8-5.
In singles competition, Case dominated Burks in her No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-0 to improve to 1-0 on the season. In No. 3 singles, May went back-and-forth with Guerrero, but fell just shot in a thrilling three set match, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2). The Jackets put up a great fight, but could not overcome the Yellow Jackets numbers as they dropped their first match of the season.
LeTourneau falls to 0-1 on the season, but are right back in action tomorrow afternoon as they will go into a double header in Abeline. They will start the day with a match against Hardin-Simmons at 9 a.m. followed by a match against McMurry at 2 p.m.
