LONGVIEW - No one may be playing better tennis at this time than the LeTourneau YellowJacket men. Their play has shown all season long and it continued in their home opener on Tuesday against Jacksonville College. Exceptional all around play has been the key all year long and on this afternoon, it was no different.
Things got rolling at doubles as the No. 3 team of junior Josh Bailey and freshman Michael McLaughlin thumped their opponents by score of 8-1. The duo lost their first game to Austin Perez and Gabe Knight, but responded by winning eight straight game to get LeTourneau its first points of the match.
Sophomore Kendall Beggs and sophomore Sindre Johnsgaard came through with a gritty, 8-5 win over their opponents Tyler Smith and Daniel Apacible. It looked as though Jacksonville College was trying to make a run at the No. 2 doubles squad, but Beggs and Johnsgaard responded greatly and slammed the door shut, taking the final two games to win it.
In singles competition, Beggs blew away Smith with a 6-0, 6-2 win to give the Jackets a 3-1 advantage followed by a 6-3, 6-2 win by freshman Laird Beaty over Gil Lim at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2. With LeTourneau up 4-2, Bailey clinched the match with a win over Perez at No. 5 singles by scored of 6-1, 6-2 followed by a 6-1, 6-4 win for Johsgaard over Apacible at No. 4 singles.
McLaughlin closed it out with a tough, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Knight to give LeTourneau the 7-2 victory and improving the team's overall record to 6-1.
LeTourneau, who is ranked 15th in the West, returns to action on Thursday as they travel to Dallas to take on Dallas Baptist. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
