RICHARDSON - The LeTourneau YellowJacket men's team opened up American Southwest Conference play on Saturday afternoon as they took on the Texas-Dallas Comets. In what was a thrilling, back-and-forth match, the Comets were too much on this day, edging the Jackets, 6-3 which included many close, great matches.
Things got rolling in doubles as the No. 1 team of senior Carlos Cantu and freshman Laird Beaty cruised by their opponents for an 8-3 win to notch the first point. However, UT-Dallas responded with two wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Both ended up being great matches as the No. 2 team of sophomores Kendall Beggs and Sindre Johnsgaard and the No. 3 team of junior Josh Bailey and Michael McLaughin put together great matches, just falling 8-6.
The singles matches then got going with No. 1, 2, and 3 all on the court. The Comets went up 3-1 with a win at No. 3 singles, but the Jackets looked to respond. Beaty put together a terrific effort at No. 2 singles, but fell just short in a three set thriller, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Meanwhile, Cantu was also in a thriller at No. 1 singles, as his match went to three sets. However, Texas-Dallas took the match as Cantu dropped a great contest, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Johnsgaard continued his terrific play, convincingly winning at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-0 while Bailey took a thrilling two set win at No. 5 singles, 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-3).
LeTourneau goes to 11-4 on the season and 0-1 in the ASC. They return to action on Thursday as they will hit the road to Marshall to take on rivals, East Texas Baptist in conference play. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
