Despite 10 Hits, Comets Take Rubber Game Over Jackets

Box Score

LONGVIEW - The LeTourneau YellowJackets and Texas-Dallas Comets squared off on Sunday afternoon after rain pushed back their rubber series game. The Comets struck for two runs in the second while scattering a few runs throughout the inning and held off a late rally to knock off LeTourneau 4-1.

The Comets got a pair of runs in the second and looked to add more in the inning, but freshman Josh Gimre came in relief with the bases loaded and forced a fly out to end the inning and keep the score at 2-0.

LeTourneau began to scatter a few hits together, but could never get anything rolling in the early part of the innings.

After Texas-Dallas added another run in the fifth, the Jackets led the bottom half off with a walk to freshman Dillon Yates followed by a single by senior Brent Sellers with one out. However, a pair of groundouts ended the threat.

The Jackets came up in the eighth and got back-to-back singles from juniors Dustin Varnado and Bryce Griffin. After a pair of outs, sophomore Ryan Bertram collected him thrid hit with a RBI single to score one and make it a 3-1 game. Junior Chris Bertram walked to load them up, but a fly ball ended the rally.

UTD got one in the ninth and despite a lead off single by senior Jay Lutz, held the Jackets off for the series win.

Gimre led the way, going seven complete innings while only allowing five hits, two earned runs, and striking out four. Sophomore Caleb Pritchett got the start and took the loss.

Offensively, R. Bertram led the way, going 3-for-4 with the long RBI while Varnado added a 2-for-5 day with a run scored. LeTourneau had 10 hits on the day, but left 10 runners on base in the loss.

LeTourneau will be back at Conrad-Vernon Field on Tuesday as they will welcome in Centenary College. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen live on letuathletics.tv.
