Jackets Can't Overcome Gents Big Inning; Drop Weekday Contest

Box Score

LONGVIEW - The LeTourneau YellowJacket baseball team returned to action on Tuesday evening as they welcomed in Centenary Gents. The Jackets struggled again at the plate, only coming away with two runs on six hits as Centenary's big five run third inning was all they needed for the 5-2 win.

LeTourneau (13-10) got the scoring started in the bottom of the second as senior Brent Sellers led things off with an infield single and moved to second on an error. Senior Jay Lutz followed that up with a RBI triple to right for the 1-0 lead.

Centenary (18-7) responded in the third by scoring five runs on five hits to take a 5-1 advantage and used the arm of Holden Novak to hold their lead throughout the game.

The Jackets got another run in the bottom of the seventh as sophomore Jon Lewis ripped a RBI single into right, but the Gents ended any other threat in that inning by nailing the second runner trying to score at home to hold onto a 5-2 advantage.

From there, the Gents kept the Jackets at bay and held on for the win.

LeTourneau pitched by committee in this game, getting a great performance from sophomore start Justin Braswell as well as sophomore Caleb Pritchett in the opening innings. Freshman Jack Van Saders pitched an inning of scoreless ball while junior Jordan Price and sophomore Ben Boles each added two innings of scoreless ball. Sophomore Andrew Smith took the loss while sophomore Michael Brents was sharp in 1.2 innings of work despite allowing a run.

Lewis led the way offensively, going 2-for-3 with a RBI while Lutz added the other the RBI with a 1-for-4 day. Sellers was 1-for-3 and score both runs.

The Jackets will be back to American Southwest Conference play on Thursday as they travel to Marshall to take on their arch rivals, the East Texas Baptist Tigers. First pitch of a three game series is set for 6 p.m.
