Box Score For the second-consecutive match, the LeTourneau University men's soccer team was on the short end of a one-goal decision. The Yellow Jackets dropped a 1-0 decision to Sewanee on Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama. It also marked the third time in four defeats for LeTourneau that it was decided by a goal.
LeTourneau (0-4-1) entered the game, having lost 2-1 in the second overtime to Birmingham Southern on Saturday night. Head Coach
Matthew Haesecke commended the tireless effort that his team put forth in the contest.
"We played hard but we were definitely tired from the short turnaround.
Carlos Guevara and
Danny Canaviri gave us strong play on defense as did
Hunter Hembrough in the midfield," said Haesecke.
Sewanee (2-3-2) ended the scoreless tie in the 63
rd minute when senior Brian Malone scored on an unassisted goal.
The Yellow Jackets were outshot by a 16-15 margin but the attack for LeTourneau was led by
Mario Lopez, who had five shots in the loss. The sophomore midfielder had a chance to put the Yellow Jackets on the scoreboard in the fifth minute but it was saved by Sewanee goalkeeper Holden Foster. He also sent in another shot in an attempt to equalize in the 78
th minute that Foster and the Tigers' defense blocked the attempt.
LeTourneau returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 17 as part of a men's/women's doubleheader at Centenary with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
